NSF BioXFEL STC Postdoctoral Research Award granted to Andrea Katz

The BioXFEL Center is proud to announce the recipient of the 2019 Postdoctoral Research Award, Andrea Katz. Andrea Katz received her Bachelor's degree in Physics and Astronomy from Trinity University in 2011.

She came to Cornell's Applied Physics department for graduate studies and joined Dr. Lois Pollack's research group. Here, Andrea developed new methods and instrumentation to study a diverse range of biological molecules. In particular, she worked to develop mixing injectors for time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography at X-ray free electron lasers. As a postdoc in the Pollack group, Andrea is developing spectroscopic methods to characterize the diffusion of reactants and reaction times in microcrystals. These methods will lead to more successful XFEL mixing experiments by allowing systems to be evaluated and optimized in advance of beamtime.
