In an effort to enhance our undergraduate summer internship program, BioXFEL is partnering with other REUs to provide a more comprehensive experience. By participating in multiple internships within the Center and it's affiliates, interns will experience a broad range of techniques, approaches and environments. Our multidisciplinary approach to education provides our interns with a diverse array of skills, extends networking and increases their chances of being admitted into Graduate School. Below we have listed several internship programs within XFEL-related fields and provided links to their applications and more information.

Summer Undergraduate Programs

SLAC (SSRL/LCLS)- Is a National Accelerator Laboratory that is world-renowned for their work in physics, chemistry, materials and environmental sciences, astrophysics, scientific computing, and many engineering fields. SLAC’s summer internship program offers exciting opportunities for undergraduate students majoring in science or engineering to conduct research. There are several internship opportunities available at SLAC:

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) Program is sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science's Office of Workplace Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS). APPLY HERE

The LCLS Internship Program provides an opportunity for students to be a part of the visionary science and engineering at a national laboratory and to interact with scientists, engineers and professionals at LCLS working in many different scientific areas including:Computer Science, Data Science, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, and Controls Engineering, Materials Science, High Energy Density Science, Laser Physics, X-ray Physics, Structural Biology and more. APPLY HERE

The Alonzo W. Ashley Internship Program provides interns practical experience in mission critical fields with the expressed objective of bridging education and professional work experience for underrepresented groups. These one-year, limited term positions will provide the participant with valuable experience working at a DOE National Laboratory and exposure to world class science and operations. APPLY HERE

The SLAC Summer Student Program includes high school (ages 18 and older), undergraduate and graduate level students.  Students can work up to twelve weeks from May until September, depending upon department needs and student school schedules. APPLY HERE

The SLAC Community College Internship (CCI) program is designed for Bay area undergradautes currently attending Community Colleges - APPLY HERE

The Department of Energy also sponsors the DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program to support graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories. APPLY HERE

Rice University- This 10 week summer internship allows students to work on research projects under faculty mentors that draw from a range of approaches (classical biochemical and genetic to non-trivial theoretical models) to study naturally-occurring genetic networks, artificial genetic and metabolic networks, and biomolecular structure, function, and evolution. This program will also provide: a creative opportunity for students to develop innovative biotechnological ideas; leadership, mentorship and social retreats; special seminars and career development workshops; stipend and travel support; on-campus housing; a capstone research poster symposium; and an ethics and responsible conduct of research discussion seminar. APPLY HERE

LLNL -  Lawrence Livermore is also a participating site for the Department of Energy's SULI program and has other opportinities available for interns. Learn more and APPLY HERE

DESY - Another great program to try is the DESY Summer Student Programme at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron. This is the home of the new European XFEL and offers undergraduate students in physics or related natural science disciplines the possibility to participate in the research activities of the laboratories. Selected candidates join in the day-to-day work of research groups at the DESY Laboratory in Hamburg or Zeuthen (Berlin) and participate in APPLY HERE

HHMI Janelia Undergraduate Scholars Program - The Janelia Undergraduate Scholars program is a 10-week summer program aimed at well-prepared, independent, and committed students with significant research experience. They accept undergraduates and post-baccalaureate students who have not committed to a PhD program APPLY HERE

RPCIWhile BioXFEL does not specifically support careers in the medical field, we still like to give our students the chance to explore their options. If you would like to gain some insight into medical research careers, please consider applying to an internship program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI). Roswell offers experiences in laboratories and clinical settings that include Cancer biophysics, Biostatistics, Tumor immunology, Cancer prevention/epidemiology, Cancer cellular/molecular biology, Cancer genetics, Molecular pharmacology and Cancer therapeutics. APPLY HERE

BioXFEL - Even if you have already completed an internship with BioXFEL, you are welcome to apply again for another summer internship. Retention of our students, both within the Center and in XFEL science fields, is important to us. We can often place returning students in the same lab as previous years or provide them with a new experience in another lab or another site. A returning appointment is not guaranteed and requires another application. If you would like to join us for another summer, please see our application page. APPLY HERE

University at Buffalo (UB) - UB hosts two Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs). The program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. One REU is in Environmental Engineering and the other is in Data-driven Materials Design. APPLY HERE

If you didn't find what you want, check out these other paid summer research programs for undergraduates through our partner IBP or search through the official list of Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) on the NSF website.
