• Biography

  Efraín was a BioXFEL intern at HWI during the summer of 2017 while he was an undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. The academic experience motivated him to pursue a graduate education and he is now a second year PhD student in Chemical and Biological Engineering at Iowa State University. Efrain’s research interests are in microbial metabolic engineering and synthetic biology. His current project involves engineering yeasts to convert oxo-degraded plastic wastes into food to improve military logistics on the short-term and address the global plastic waste crisis on the long-term.
