Department of Physics

August 2021

The Department of Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) seeks outstanding candidate(s) for one or two post-doctoral position in the group of Prof. Marius Schmidt to begin as soon as possible.

The successful applicant will become part of an interdisciplinary team at the UWM that aims to solve important biological questions using ultra-brilliant, pulsed X-ray sources such as the expanding global network of free-electron X-ray laser facilities (see e.g. Tenboer et al., 2014, Science; Pande et al. 2016, Science; Olmos et al., 2018, BMC-Biology; Pandey et al., 2019 Nature Methods). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be productive with significant national and international recognition, work with the team of UWM faculty supported by BioXFEL (a National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center, STC), and collaborate within the STC network - a consortium of eight universities across the U.S.. Beamtime opportunities at the LCLS, European XFEL and SACLA are available. This is a unique opportunity to enter this highly innovative field. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to: time-resolved crystallography, biophysics, time-resolved optical spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and imaging, and enzymology. UWM is in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, at Lake Michigan, close to the Chicago greater area. Minimum Qualifications: • Doctorate in (Bio) Physics, Biology, (Bio) Chemistry or a related field. • A demonstrated record of research accomplishments (papers). • Willingness to travel to synchrotrons and free electron X-ray lasers in the US, Europe and Japan to collect data. • Familiarity with use of computers, and basic programming skills are required.
